NRHQ Weight Loss Guide To Ketones No ratings yet.

Ketones come up a lot when you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or you have diabetes. Basically, ketones are the end results of your body burning fat for energy. However, those with type 1 diabetes will produce ketones resulting from insulin deficiency or from high blood sugar. Since many people with diabetes often don’t have the right amount of insulin, the glucose begins to build up in the blood instead of entering the cells. So, the cells burn fat instead of the glucose, and the ketones end up forming in the blood, then they are released through the urine.

High levels of ketones in the blood can cause the blood to become too acidic, resulting in a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Because of this, the presence of ketones often means a person is in need of medical help. Low to moderate levels of ketone yields a call to the doctor. However, if the levels are high you must seek medical attention right away. Ketone build up can also effect people have type 2 diabetes, as their bodies can’t use insulin properly. And those who aren’t eating enough, whereas ketone buildup occurs because of starvation.

Symptoms Of High Ketone Build Up

If you have diabetes, it’s important to be very aware of ketone build up. And these early symptoms require a call to your doctor, at the very least. The early symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Dry Mouth With A Strong Thirst
  • High Blood Sugar Levels

And if you have any of the below symptoms, your ketone levels are way too high. You must seek medical attention right away:

  • Breathing Problems
  • Nausea And Vomiting
  • Stomach Pain
  • Dry, Fruity Breath Odor
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Confusion And Hallucinations
  • Flushed Skin

What Is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a state where your body is burning fat instead of sugar, resulting in optimal weight loss. For this to happen, you cannot have any type of diabetes, and you must be eating enough calories. Second, you must eat little to no carbohydrates. Some people claim that ketosis gives mental focus and clarity, as well as optimal weight loss and appetite suppression.

If you adhere to a modern Western diet, you may know the blood sugar swings intimately. Moodiness, fatigue, intense cravings, and excess weight gain are just some of the symptoms of the standard American diet. Since carbohydrates turn into sugars in the body, eating loads of carbs adds to this instability. But, when you cut out all sugars, including carbs, your body is able to work much more efficiently.

Can You Lose Weight With Ketones?

Many people swear by using ketones to lose weight. And although it may yield good results, it’s definitely not safe for everyone. Typically, those who want to use ketosis to lose weight must first be on a low carb diet. Again, this isn’t recommended for those with diabetes and I would suggest speaking with your doctor for healthier alternatives. Basically, ketosis is when your body is maintaining an extremely high fat-burning rate and using the ketones as energy, even for your brain.  It’s what so-called ketogenic diets are designed to start.

To achieve this state, the amount of insulin in the blood must be low. Because the lower the insulin, the higher the ketone production. You can measure the amount of ketones in your blood with urine test sticks or by pricking your finger. If you do choose to go this route, it’s vital that you are able to test your blood regularly to stay safe and healthy.
