What Exactly Are Wrinkles?

We have all heard of the word wrinkle and can imagine what they look like. But what exactly are wrinkles? In short, wrinkles are a result of the skin thinning, drying out, losing elasticity & decreasing collagen production. Underneath the skin is a layer of fat that makes the skin plump and smooth. However, when we age or are exposed to environmental damage such as sun exposure, the fat layer and collagen levels decrease causing the skin to sag and form depressions. These wrinkly depressions can develop anywhere on the body, but primarily show up on the face, neck and around the eyes & lips.

What Causes Wrinkles To Form?

Despite what you may have heard, wrinkles/fine lines are not only formed by aging skin. In fact, a variety of factors can cause wrinkles such as environmental damage, smoking and even showing expression! The cause also depends on what type of wrinkle. Dynamic lines are often times caused by facial movements and expression. However, the majority of fine lines are caused by sun exposure. UV rays break down collagen and cause the skin to crease, that is why sunscreen is incredibly important when protecting the skin from wrinkles! Skin that is hydrated and protected from the sun is least likely to form wrinkles.

How Do You Prevent Or Reduce Wrinkles?

As stated before, the #1 cause of fine lines is over exposure to the sun. So, the best thing you can do to keep the skin looking youthful and wrinkle free, is to avoid spending lots of time in the sun. If you do go outside, make sure to wear sunscreen on the face and neck and a hat to shield the face from the sun!
Another thing you can do is stay hydrated! This means drink at least 8 cups of water a day and make sure you are using a nice moisturizer that traps in water to keep skin hydrated. It’s also a good idea to avoid smoking, this can age your skin faster than you might think!

What Are The Most Effective Ingredients For Wrinkle Reduction?

There are thousands of anti-aging serums/creams on the market that claim to reduce the appearance of fine lines, so how are you to know what works best? The first tip is to avoid products that contain alcohol. Using alcohol on the skin will only dry out the skin and cause more wrinkles to form. Always look for creams that contain an SPF to protect your skin from the sun.
Retinol is another effective anti-aging ingredient that uses the power of vitamin A to prevent new wrinkles from developing. Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant for wrinkle-free skin. Vitamin C aids in skin cell rejuvenation & brightens hyper pigmentation for a smooth & even finish. At the end of the day, make sure ingredients are clinically tested to avoid scams.
