What Is Tribulus Terrestris? No ratings yet.

Tribulus Terrestris – Your medicine cabinet is probably full of tried-and-true drugs that have been touted by doctors to alleviate symptoms or even help cure certain conditions. But new medications are being found all the time, especially from plants. In fact, many of the substances that we use as medicine today have their (*ahem*) roots in botany. And, some of these seemingly new remedies actually were discovered by indigenous peoples hundreds or even thousands of years ago. They’re just being used in the western world more recently due to global communication and trade.

One of these newer substances is tribulus terrestris. People claim that it can enhance athletic performance, help heart conditions, and even improve sexual performance. But, are these claims accurate? Could tribulus terrestris be bursting onto the medical scene as a medical powerhouse? In this article, we’ll take a look at what exactly tribulus terrestris is, what it can do, and what it can’t.

What Is Tribulus Terrestris?

Tribulus Terrestris is a spiky plant that is found in the Mediterranean as well as Asia, Africa, and Australia. It is classified as an invasive species in North America. This plant produces fruit, but it shouldn’t be eaten directly from the plant and some studies suggest consuming the fruit of the plant can actually contribute to lung collapse. It may be a good idea to stay away from the plant itself in general, since the spikes (“nutlets”) that fall off the plant are so sharp and hard that they can puncture bicycle tires and certainly injure a careless person. That being said, once processed properly, various parts of the tribulus plant can be used as medicine, and have been used in this fashion for years.

What Can Tribulus Terrestris Do?

The studies that have been conducted regarding tribulus terrestris are somewhat limited, which means that scientists are still not sure about all of the things that this plant could potentially help or cure. However, the studies that have been down suggest that tribulus terrestris could help lessen the symptoms of angina (chest pain) and maybe even prove beneficial to people suffering from sexual problems or infertility. So, taking a tribulus terrestris supplement might help those who have erectile dysfunction or poor libido. Plus, these studies also show that supplementing with the herb could enhance athletic performance. That could be good news for men who have hormonal trouble and are looking for a way to alleviate side effects such as muscle loss or poor sexual performance.

What Can’t Tribulus Terrestris Do?

Essentially, the lack of research on tribulus terrestris means that it isn’t a reliable method to treat almost any condition, except for (possibly) the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph. Some people may hope to take supplements featuring the herb in order to fix heart and circulatory problems. However, the studies only saw an improvement in the symptoms of angina when test subjects used tribulus terrestris, not necessarily an improvement in the conditions causing the angina. In the case of sexual dysfunction, you may want to speak to your doctor to see if it would be a good option to use tribulus terrestris supplements in lieu of or in tandem with testosterone replacement therapy.

Does Tribulus Terrestris Have Side Effects?

If you are healthy, it’s probably okay to take tribulus , at least for a short time. This excludes women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, however, since lab tests on animals showed a link between tribulus  and problems with fetal development. Otherwise the side effects of this herb are fairly mild, and may include trouble sleeping or irregular periods, both of which may be treated with medication.

All in all, tribulus is still a relative unknown in the medical industry. However, you may find that it benefits you. If you are interested in trying tribulus , be sure to talk to your doctor about your options.
