And, history has provided us with a number of strange, unorthodox, and impractical diets as a result. Of course, we’ve all tried an odd method or two when it comes to dropping pounds. Weirdest Fad Diets: Cabbage Soup Diet
We’ve touched on this diet before, but the Cabbage Soup Diet is a fad that has actually taken in quite a few desperate dieters since its start in the 1950s. Whether Roald Dahl knew about this fad when he made a nod to the impoverished Bucket family eating only cabbage soup in his 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we can’t know for sure. Now, don’t get us wrong – cabbage soup can be delicious. The common Russian cabbage soup, shchi or zelyoniye shchi, is hearty and tasty. But, eating nothing but cabbage soup all the time? We’d say unadvisable, to say the least.
Weirdest Fad Diets: Master Cleanse
In hindsight, we could have saved this one for last on our list of weirdest fad diets. It’s infinitely crazy and it even has followers in the celebrity world. But, the Master Cleanse diet consists of 10 days (or more) of a liquid-only diet: lemonade, salt water, and laxative tea. We’re sure it works to help you drop pounds at first. After all, you’re probably taking in a miniscule amount of calories. But, we have to wonder if it’s worth the hunger. Plus, we have no clue how celebrities can function in their busy lives while eating basically nothing. And, unfortunately, you’ll probably gain the weight back again almost immediately.
Weirdest Fad Diets: Cigarette Diet
This one is a bite out of history – in the 20s and even later, cigarettes were advertised as healthy. And, some advertisements suggested that smoking a cigarette instead of eating sweets was a viable way to drop pounds. Well, it’s true that some people replace their cravings with cigarettes. But, is it a healthy way to lose weight? Don’t make us come over there.
Weirdest Fad Diets: Hallelujah Diet
We never thought we’d talk about religion on our list of the weirdest fad diets, but here we are. In the 1990s, a reverend in the US came up with the idea that you could get slim by eating only what Adam and Eve would have presumably eaten in the Garden of Eden. So, that means mostly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Hopefully you have a garden. And hopefully it doesn’t have a Tree of Knowledge.
Weirdest Fad Diets: Single Egg (And Lots Of Wine?)
If you thought that people weren’t trying to lose weight in the 1500s, you’d be wrong. In 1558 a Venetian man named Luigi Cornaro wrote a book called The Art of Living Long. Stunningly, he ate as little as one egg per day – although he apparently allowed himself up to 500 grams of wine. When he started his absurd limitations on food, he was in his late thirties. But, he lived to be 98. Good genetics, or all due to one of the weirdest fad diets we’ve ever heard of? Your guess is as good as ours.
