The Garcinia Cambogia fruit is grown native in forested areas of Indonesia and is used today in many extracts. Mostly, the form of Garcinia taken is powdered form, capsulized and taken by mouth. The key active ingredient that is sought from Garcinia Cambogia is HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid). The HCA potency of Garcinia Extract can vary, but is more often 50% or 60%. Different processes can also affect the purity and yield of HCA from Garcinia. Although the source of the extract is natural, the extraction processes may not be. Garcinia Extraction Techniques
Botancial extraction has many techniques. In order to separate the desired HCA from Garcinia, the fruit itself must undergo some type of a process. Some of these processes are simple while others can be a bit more complex. It can come in the form of an essential oil through processes like steam distillation, while others can extract on more a chemical level, as with CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Extract.
Steam Distillation Method
HCA is extracted from dried out Garcinia fruit rind. In Steam distillation, the fruit rind is penetrated by heat and water vapor. This permeation breaks down the organic material and over time, releases essential oils – water vapor and key compounds. Once the volatile essential oils have been extracted, they are allowed to cool and condense. As this occurs, it separates and the then, key hydrophilic components are separated. It is then easy to isolate key active ingredients. This process is crude but effective.
Alcohol Distillation Method
The Alcohol Extraction process is more complex and effective than Steam Distillation. The Garcinia Cambogia constituents are complete dissolved and then distilled to purify the solution. This process of extraction is one of the more commonly used methods to extract botanical compounds, such as HCA from Garcinia Cambogia. Alcohol is used to separate the compounds that are soluble in alcohol from those that are in-soluble. As Hydroxycitric Acid does not breakdown by alcohol, it can be separated and later isolated. A second distillation process removes the alcohol from the solution. This leaves behind pure, concentrated compounds, in this case, HCA.
One of the most common and simplest methods of Superficial Extraction is through the use of CO2. Using carbon dioxide and high pressure, the key compounds are isolated. Carbon Dioxide Extraction involves low temperatures. This ensure that the potency and effectiveness of the extract is not altered by high heat. Upon the completion of the process, the CO2 is simply released into the air leaving behind the extracted HCA compounds.

Garcinia Cambogia extract is an organic compound is studied for its uses in food technology and pharmaceutical technology. Today, it is most popularly in slimming products. It is utilized as a digestive aid, endurance enhancer and weight loss support supplement. Other uses included treatment of joint pain, parastites and dysentery.
